Police Probe Viral Video as the Edo State Police Command investigates an altercation between officers of the Edo State Traffic Management Agency (EDSTMA) and operatives of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT).
The video, which has generated reactions on social media, also shows an IRT officer firing his rifle into the air during the confrontation.
In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, Edo State Command, ASP Eno Ikoedem, the Commissioner of Police, CP Patrick Daaor, said he had interviewed representatives of both parties and directed a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Commissioner also ordered that the conduct of the officer seen firing the rifle be subjected to appropriate disciplinary review.
The Police Command said it would not condone acts of indiscipline, unprofessional conduct or abuse of police powers by its personnel.
It added that any officer found culpable after the investigation would be appropriately sanctioned in line with existing laws and regulations.
The Command also stressed the importance of inter-agency collaboration and mutual respect between security and government agencies, noting that effective public safety requires agencies to work together professionally.
While describing the incident as serious, the Police said it would not affect the established working relationship between the Edo State Police Command and EDSTMA.
The Command further urged members of the public not to take the law into their own hands and encouraged anyone with complaints about police misconduct to report them through the appropriate channels.
The Police investigation is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the altercation and determine whether any officer breached applicable laws or regulations.
