The former Madrid midfielder says he draws lessons from legendary coaches Carlo Ancelotti and Jose Mourinho to navigate pressure and scrutiny.
Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso says managing criticism and media scrutiny is an unavoidable part of coaching at one of the world’s biggest clubs.
The Spanish giants have struggled recently, failing to win in their last three games across all competitions, sparking reports of player dissatisfaction under Alonso’s leadership.
Speaking ahead of Madrid’s Champions League match against Olympiacos on Wednesday, Alonso acknowledged the challenges but said he was inspired by the way his former coaches navigated pressure.
“It’s demanding, that’s for sure, but I’m not the first coach to face these situations,” Alonso said. “I often think about how Carlo [Ancelotti] or Mourinho handled it, coaches I played under. Manuel Pellegrini too. These situations are not new. You have to know how to live with it, maintain drive, and exercise self-criticism. Of course, we are not happy with the last few games.”
Madrid currently sit seventh in the Champions League group phase and recently suffered a defeat to Liverpool at Anfield. In La Liga, Alonso secured his first Clasico win against Barcelona in October but followed that with draws against Rayo Vallecano and Elche. Despite this, Los Blancos remain top of the league, one point ahead of Barcelona.
Alonso, who took over from Ancelotti in the summer, faces the challenge of connecting with players differently from his predecessor. Reports have emerged of frustrations from Vinicius Junior over substitutions and Fede Valverde over playing out of position.
“I’ve had to work with many great players and big personalities,” Alonso said. “They are demanding, professional, and always want the best. These reactions are normal, and that is part of what makes them so good. Being at Real Madrid is a privilege, and staying connected with players of this level is essential.”
